Scuba Diving!

We had a perfect day for scuba diving.  It was sunny and bright.  We got out in the water and my kids took to it like they've done it a million times.  I was scared to death!  The most important rule of diving is not to panic.  I was panicked.  I'm not overly fond of heights but I realized that I hate depths even more.  Bring on the highest, scariest roller coaster and I'm on it compared to having to lower yourself 40 ft under the water without drowning.  As we started descending down I had to stop.  I wanted to go back to the surface.  The young little dive master named Felipe wouldn't let me.  I told him I wanted to go up and he said your ok, were going down.  I said stop-go up (which are all done with hand signals)  He said- you're ok- breathe - we are going down.  It took everything I posess to do this for my children.  I never want to do that again.  After we reached the bottom it was better.  It's amazing to be in that environment, swimming with schools of tropical fish.  The puffer fish are so fun to watch.  After an eternity had passed we finally got to go back up.  I was never so happy to surface.  We had to wait an hour between dives and I didn't want to go back down but after a tremendous amount of peer pressure from my children I reluctantly agreed.  Going down was easier but as soon as I reached the bottom the other dive master was giving the signal for shark.  Ben was so excited- that's what he wanted to see.  There were lot's of eels and octopus which are really ugly.  I tried to concentrate on the pretty fish instead of the pain in my ears which was awful.  The kids are already planning the next dive but I'm sure I'm busy that day!

  1. when john and I went to hawaii I found out that I do not like snorkeling or snuba(cross between snorkeling and scuba- you don't have to get certified) - I get massive panic attacks too. they were nice to me though. should we ever vacation together with our families somewhere tropical- I will GLADLY sit on the beach with you and read. John loved snorkeling and snubaing. He would go back down in a heartbeat.
