Ahhhh to be fourteen!

Yesterday Kaeli performed in the Dallas Children's Parade with the drill team.  She had to be at school at 5:45 a.m.- she is not a morning person and it takes her a long time to get ready so I woke her up at 4 a.m. to make sure she got up and had enough time to do her hair and make-up.  As she was getting ready I heard her scream as she burned herself on her curling iron and it left a little red mark.  I let her finish getting ready and dropped her off at school.

To be a parent of a teenage daughter requires an enormous amount of patience.  When those little moments come to have a little fun I took advantage of that!  This was our conversation as we drove home from the parade:

Me- Kaeli!  what's on your neck?
Kaeli- What?  What is it?
Me- that red mark- is there something that I should know about!?  That looks like a hickey!!!
Kaeli- MOM!!!  really!  How do you even know what that is?  you are old.
Me- You think I too old to know what a hickey is?  I'm NOT that old.
Kaeli- yes you are- you were like a hippey.  You listen to that hippey music all the time.
Me- Kaeli- I was not a hippey.  I was a teenager in the 80's.  That doesn't make me a hippey.  Grandma lived in the 60's and would qualify for that title but not me. And for your information 80's music was rock-n-roll not hipppey!
Kaeli-  (laughing)  you don't know anything!  you were soooo hippey and so is your music.
Me-  do you know what a hippey is?
Kaeli- people who dressed weird and sang bad music.
Me- when did the hippey era end?
Kaeli- like in the 90's
me- (laughing)  Ben was born in the 90's is he a hippey?
Kaeli- really mom- No.
Me-  OK then - I think I should teach you some things you have obviously missed like when the hippey's lived.  By the end of the 70's that phase was going out of style and rock-n-roll was becoming very popular.  There are lot's of songs from the 80's you know but probably don't realize when they were made.
Kaeli-  I hate 80's music.  It all sounds country- like Billy Idol!
me- (laughing so hard I thought I was going to die!)   Billy Idol is not a country music singer!
Kaeli-  Well it sounds like that to me.  No one likes that music.
Me-  You are very wrong-  they are classics that will live on forever!  You love the Rock-n-roller coaster at Disney World and that is Aerosmith singing from the 80's!!!!
Kaeli-  The only good music is my music!
Me-  What is your music?
Kaeli-  like music from today
Me-  The music today is terrible- you can't understand a thing they say and when you can they are terrible lyrics!  I can put some good music on your phone to listen too!
Kaeli-  Don't even try to pretend you know good music- you don't!  let's just leave it at that!

The whole conversation had me laughing so hard.  She thinks I'm still clueless and that I have no idea about teenagers or what they do.  She also informed me that boys don't like to hold hands, kiss, or give hickey's.  I really need to get this on video for that wonderful moment years from now when she has her own teenage daughter!
